Pioneer in BC Paddlesports

Brian was a Vancouver Civic Award Recipient for his 50+ years as a teacher and sports instructor/organizer. Many called him the Godfather of white water kayaking and canoeing in B.C. His other loves were his days at his Hollyburn cabin in the 30's, skiing and calling square dances into the 60's. He taught school in Vancouver at General Wolfe, Charles Tupper and Lord Byng.

I only know of Brian Creer by name, but a great many BC paddlers have crossed paths with him in various ways over the years, as he was a big leader, instructor, developer in recreational paddling around here.”

His Story

1915
Born Frederick Brian Creer on June 30 in Vancouver, British Columbia.
1930s
Early canoeing experiences on BC's rivers and lakes. Spent formative years at the family's Hollyburn cabin, skiing and exploring the outdoors.
1960s-70s
Recognized as the most influential whitewater kayaking and canoeing instructor in the province. Spearheaded production of affordable canoe and kayak moulds distributed to communities across BC, enabling paddlers to build their own boats.
1967
Led teenage campers from Camp Deka on a historic 700 km journey down the upper Fraser River in 16-foot Chestnut Prospector canoes, as part of Canada's Centenary Journey celebrating Confederation's 100th birthday.
1974
Co-founded the Canadian Recreational Canoeing Association (CRCA) in British Columbia with John Eberhard. The organization evolved through Canoe BC and BCRCA to become the RCABC. Authored the first RCABC instructors' manual and established canoeing safety standards.
1986
Awarded the Vancouver Civic Merit Award on January 7 by unanimous vote of City Council, recognizing 50+ years of outstanding achievement as a teacher and sports instructor.
2009
At 90 years old, still putting paddle to water on Upper Campbell Lake during Strathcona Park Lodge's 50th anniversary celebrations.
2011
Passed away May 30 at the age of 95. A Celebration of Life was held at Lord Byng Pool on June 12, the school where he taught for many years.

The highest honour bestowed by the Recreational Canoeing Association of British Columbia, recognizing significant contributions to paddling sports in the province. Awarded annually since 1986.
The Brian Creer Trophy
Canoe Kayak Canada · National
Presented at the Canadian Whitewater National Championships to the team earning the most points across all whitewater disciplines. A national recognition that Brian's impact reached far beyond British Columbia.
